Discovering Love/Hate !

I recently watched the first series of RTE’s Love/Hate, and I think it is clear to say it is the best drama RTE have ever produced. The show follows fictional characters in Dublin’s criminal underworld. The acting is chillingly effective and each actor gives a terrifying portrayal of the life of a modern day Irish gangster. Aidan Giles plays John Boy Power, plays a menacing, ruthless, bloodthirsty drug boss who does what he likes and has the money to get away with it. Robert Sheenan gives an excellent performance as Darren Tracey, a young gang member working for John Boy. The show also features actors Ruth Negga, Ruth Bradly, Killian Scott and Chris Newman.

The series follows the Darren when he returns to Dublin from Spain, where he was hiding from the guards as he is wanted for gun possession. The same day as his return his brother Robbie is released from prison. While waiting for a lift home, Robbie is shot and killed in a drive by shooting. Devastated by his brothers death, Darren sets out to find his brothers killer and at the same time, attempt to rekindle his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Rosie. Different events lead to a break in John Boy’s gang and different sides are taken. The show excellently illustrates the seriously terrifying consequences of being apart of Dublin’s ‘Gangland’.

The first series began broadcasting on Sunday 3 October 2010, but it was only recently until I decided I would give it a try. Having being a fan of Robert Sheenan for his portrayal of Nathan Young on E4’s Misfits, i first heard of Love/Hate when he left Misfits to focus on other projects like Love/Hate. Having seen him play such a humorous role for years, i could have never imagined him playing the chilling role he plays in Love/hate.

The shows first series received positive reviews although some critics claimed some actors were to ‘slick’ and ‘clean’ looking to play the characters they are playing. I however found each actor perfect for their role and who ever said gangsters have to be ugly ? The shows second serious has received critical acclaim and I can’t wait to watch it.
